The Rule Change

The NBA penalized 'take fouls' — deliberate fouls committed to stop fast breaks before they develop. Instead of a common foul, the fouled team received one free throw (shot by any player) plus possession. This eliminated the tactic of grabbing a player in transition to prevent an easy basket.

Statistical Impact

Transition scoring opportunities increased measurably, and the number of take fouls plummeted as the incentive was removed. The rule made the fast break significantly more valuable and rewarded teams that invested in transition offense and defense. It was one of the most impactful pace rules in over a decade.
