The Rule Change

After the Pistons-Pacers Finals, the NBA cracked down on hand-checking, forearm contact, and body bumps on perimeter players. Defenders could no longer impede a ball-handler's progress with physical contact away from the basket.

Statistical Impact

This is widely considered the most impactful rule change of the 2000s. Perimeter players gained a massive advantage. Scoring rose from 93.4 to 97.2 PPG. The rule change directly enabled the rise of isolation-heavy guards like Kobe, Wade, and later Harden. It fundamentally shifted the balance of power from defense to offense.
