A labor dispute shortened the 1998-99 season to 50 games. Teams had compressed schedules with inadequate preparation, and the season started in February instead of November.
Statistical Impact
League-wide scoring cratered to 91.6 PPG, the lowest since the shot clock era. Shooting percentages plummeted. While partly due to condensed schedules and poor conditioning, the low-scoring trend reflected the broader defensive dominance of the late 1990s.
