The Rule Change

When a player was fouled while shooting a three-pointer and missed, they received three free throws instead of two. This addressed the inequity of awarding only two free throws for a foul on a shot worth three points.

Statistical Impact

Increased the penalty for fouling three-point shooters and slightly disincentivized aggressive closeouts on long-range shooters. The rule was a necessary housekeeping adjustment to the three-point line but also subtly reinforced the value of three-point shooting by ensuring foul shooters could earn three points from the line.
