Steals and Blocks Recorded as Official Stats

The Rule Change

The NBA began officially tracking steals and blocked shots as box score statistics for the first time. Prior to the 1973-74 season, these defensive contributions were not formally recorded, making it impossible to evaluate defenders statistically.

Statistical Impact

Transformed how defensive players were valued and remembered. Players like Bill Russell, who retired in 1969, had their shot-blocking prowess documented only anecdotally. The new statistics elevated defensive specialists and eventually influenced awards voting, contract negotiations, and historical comparisons.
