Coaches Permitted to Call Timeouts

The Rule Change

Prior to this rule change, only players on the court could call timeouts during live play. Beginning in 1967-68, head coaches were also granted the authority to call timeouts from the sideline, giving them greater tactical control over game flow.

Statistical Impact

Shifted strategic power from players to coaches. Coaches could now stop the clock to set up crucial plays, halt opponent momentum, or rest fatigued players without relying on a player to recognize the moment. This strengthened the role of coaching in the NBA and enabled more sophisticated late-game management.
